Plum Grove began in July 2003

The Plum Grove initiative was based around founding director Tony Smith’s experiences developing and trading products for Australia’s single desk operator at the time AWB Ltd, and the financial services industry.

At its outset, Plum Grove was based on a vision of bringing both risk management and transparency within the financial services industry to the Australian grains industry. This vision saw the establishment of innovative pools, which were run in conjunction with CBH Group that continue today. In addition Plum Grove key personnel also developed DailyGrain, which is today the most widely used price discovery service in WA. This was spun off into an independently managed business and is now owned by the CBH Group.

In the past 12 years Plum Grove has grown from 2 people based in a small office, to one of WA’s most respected wheat management companies.  Plum Grove now has a team of 71 people and a successful investment model combining local expertise with Asian food demand.

One of the strengths of Plum Grove is their close relationship with Australian wheat growers.

This relationship stems back to its founding directors and many of the existing staffs’ country upbringing. Many were born and raised on a farming operation throughout WA’s wheat belt. Plum Grove’s founder Tony Smith’s family farm was part of long generation of family owned operations in Goomalling. The property in which Tony grew up bordered the farm in which his father was raised and along which was a local landmark known as “Plum Grove”. Although the original origins of the name of Plum Grove cannot be verified (all the locals seem to have a different story), it was this connection with WA farming that Tony wished to bring with them into the business.
